Hérault and Béziers
The department Hérault is just about half way between Marseille and the Spanish border and it’s facing the Mediterranean to the south and the Central Massive to the north. Hérault is a department in the region of Occitanie, which was created by the territorial reform of 2014 and comprising 13 departments, resulting from the merger of the former Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées regions.
The town of Béziers is located 70 km south west from Montpellier which is the capital of the department. The town of Béziers has a very old historical centre and buildings with fine architecture. A part of the town's history goes back some 2 700 years.
The modern airport of Montpellier has daily departures to many international destinations as well as a very good domestic service.
The region is under rapid development and a many of the low-cost airlines have flights to Béziers, Marseille, Montpellier, Nimes, Perpignan, Carcassonne and Gerona (Spain). Ryan Air has many interesting alternatives to offer and they constantly develop - worth keeping an eye on.
Other important towns in Hérault are Agde, founded by the greeks, and Sète with the largest fishing port in this part of the Mediterranean.
The motorways are also being enhanced in this region and in December 2010 the last kilometers to Béziers on the motorway A75 were finished and it now connects with the motorway A9. The overpass in Millau was opened in 2004 and is well worth a visit. The A75 is a toll free motorway which also offers some stunning views during the drive.
The Languedoc wines have improved considerably during the last 25 years. From having produced basic table wines, the region is now competing with the major French wine districts.
Districts such as Faugères, Saint Chinian and Pic Saint Loup have attracted attention. There are more and more A.O.C. (Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée) and many very good Vins de Pays d'Oc. Connoisseurs from all over the world are ranking Languedoc/Roussillion as one of the most important quality wine production areas.
Another speciality in our region is the Picpoul de Pinet, a dry, white wine, which goes perfectly with oysters and fish.
Food and Culture
In the region, vegetables, honey and olive oil are also produced. During the growing season, there are road-side markets everywhere. Good quality and low prices. Almost all villages have got street markets once or twice per week. The most well-known are the Thursday market in Agde and the Saturday market in Pézenas. Apart from food of all kinds, you will find wickerwork, clothing, souvenirs, tablecloths and many other things.
During the summer months, the region lives up and festivals are found around. In Pézenas you have the Mirondela des Arts, a craft festival with street theatre, music and exhibitions. The city is also proud of its Molière, the famous French play writer. He lived and wrote some of his eternal comedies here in middle of the 17th century.
In August, the annual Féria de Béziers takes place and the whole town vibrates with the music and happy people for several days.
There are plenty of lovely beaches and the water is both clean and warm.
In the region, we are proud to have more than 300 days of sunshine a year. For those who like bathing, sailing and other water activities, there are several small paradises along the coast.
The region provides a variety of other spare time activities such as horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, trekking, cycling and golf. Within an hour’s drive you will find several good quality golf courses with reasonable green-fees.
